Okay, Chicago. You’re really not so bad. I can do this for 3 more years.
The Second City is the first profiled inPritchard’s new series of urban profiles, “Places in Time.” Using footage shot from various perspectives in the city since 2010, “Places in Time: Chicago” is a beautiful time-lapse portrait of some of the city’s most meaningful sites.

Google takes one more step toward BEING INSIDE YOU with Project Glass
While ‘Project Glass’ is just a concept at the moment, it show’s where Google’s head is at. Namely, trying to get inside of yours. It was only a matter of time before augmented reality more intuitively integrated. Right now AR based apps don’t work that well so it will probably be some time before something like Project Glass hits the market. However, Google is clearly working with some pretty cool, if not super intrusive ideas.
I’m not sure how I feel about iShadez, but it’s certainly exciting to think about the types of consumer electronics we’ll be seeing in the next few years.
National Puppy Day? Maybe it’s a sign that I should get a puppy.
Known as a lazy puppy, the French bulldog is perfect for anyone who isn’t keen on waking up at 6 a.m. for walks. And his insanely cute face is the perfect thing to wake up to. This happy puppy is also eager to please, so getting him to sit through “Pride and Prejudice” (the five-hour A&E version is clearly the best) or “The Notebook” will be no problem at all.
Our Women’s section editors have created a list of puppies who will treat you better than a partner, thus making them the new office heroes.
My good friend Dr. Gary Tsai is raising money on Kickstarter to tell the story of the mentally ill in San Francisco. He has been a strong advocate for mental health programs, publishing editorials in several papers throughout Northern California. Donate, seriously; hit $100 and I’ll give you a high five.

Mindfulness, derived from Buddhist meditation has started to explode in the psychology world as new type of therapy. It’s an interesting way to distract the mind and focus on other things rather than ruminate. It also calms and relaxes a person. People can use mindfulness to just concentrate on objects or food they are eating. Not only does mindfully eating have psychological benefits it also has physiological benefits!
Remember that you eat with your eyes first! Examine your food, notice the colors and textures. Smell it. Then put a small bite in your mouth and let the food go to different parts of your tongue. Maybe not the most efficient way to eat but doing it for the first couple of minutes may have some health benefits! Next time you take a bite, maybe you should take a pause and eat mindfully.
Can’t wait to try this…
Roasted Eggplant Salad with Smoked Almonds and Goat Cheese
- 2 large eggplants, about 2 pounds
- Kosher salt
- 1/3 cup olive oil
- 2 tablespoons cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- 4 large garlic cloves, roughly chopped
- Juice of 1 lemon, about 2 tablespoons
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 cup flat parsley leaves, roughly chopped
- 1/2 cup smoked almonds, roughly chopped
- 2 ounces goat cheese, crumbled and divided
- 1/4 cup finely chopped scallions
- Heat the oven to 400°F. Cut the eggplant into 1-inch cubes and put in a large bowl. Sprinkle lightly with kosher salt and set aside while making the marinade.
- Whisk together the olive oil, cider vinegar, honey, smoked paprika, and cumin. Dab away any extra water that has beaded up on the eggplant and toss with the marinade. Stir in the garlic. Spread the eggplant on a large baking sheet, lined with parchment and slide onto a rack placed in the center of the oven. Roast at 400°F for 40 minutes, or until very tender and slightly browned. (Stir every 15 minutes and check after 30 minutes to make sure it isn’t burning.) Remove from the oven and cool slightly.
- Whisk together the lemon juice and soy sauce. Return the eggplant to the bowl and toss with the lemon juice mixture. Stir in the parsley leaves, smoked almonds, and most of the goat cheese, reserving a little.
- Spread the finished salad in a serving bowl and sprinkle the reserved goat cheese crumbles and scallions on top.
